2020, Clinical Psychology ReviewSocial information processing in preschool children: Relations to sociodemographic risk and problem behavior
2011, Journal of Experimental Child PsychologyCitation Excerpt :It is important to understand the cognitive foundations of early peer relations and how these are linked to early risk factors and children’s behavior. Moreover, the success of interventions to change distorted social information processing patterns is related to the early onset of such interventions, before the distorted patterns are being fully ingrained (August, Egan, Realmuto, & Hektner, 2003). The ability to comprehensively examine social information processing patterns in preschool-aged children is a necessary precondition to develop successful representation-based interventions with this age group.
Moving the field of prevention from science to service: Integrating evidence-based preventive interventions into community practice through adapted and adaptive models
2010, Applied and Preventive PsychologyCitation Excerpt :The Early Risers program has evolved over a period of 12 years, informed by results from a pivotal efficacy trial and subsequent effectiveness trials (for a review of all empirical research involving Early Risers see August, Bloomquist, Realmuto, & Hektner, 2007). The efficacy trial demonstrated that children receiving Early Risers, compared to a no-intervention control group, made significant gains on (a) proximal intervention targets (e.g., behavioral adjustment, social competence, academic achievement) and program parents reported improvement in parenting practices (August, Realmuto, Hektner, & Bloomquist, 2001; August, Hektner, Egan, Realmuto, & Bloomquist, 2002), (b) intermediate intervention targets based on peer assessments of leadership and social etiquette and child selection of less aggressive friends (August, Egan, Hektner, & Realmuto, 2003), and (c) distal intervention targets as reflected in lower rates of oppositional and defiant problem behaviors by the middle school years (Bernat, August, Hektner, & Bloomquist, 2007). Following initial validation, Early Risers was disseminated to the practice community and further validated in two effectiveness trials.
