The etiology and pathogenesis of pulmonary artery aneurysms are not well known. Approximately half are associated with congenital heart disease, the most frequent being patent ductus arteriosus, followed by ventricular and atrial septal defects. Most such cases are associated with pulmonary hypertension. Main pulmonary artery aneurysms may also accompany absence of leaflets of the pulmonary valve and stenosis of the ventriculoarterial junction. Other causes include infection (syphilis,

2014, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :The optimal approach is tailored to the unique case, with patient anatomy, hemodynamics, and comorbidities as well as surgeon expertise all playing a role. In addition, PA aneurysm repair may be considered at time of concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting or valvular replacement [8]. There have been several case reports describing PA aneurysms presenting as endobronchial masses [1–3].
Pleomorphic malignant histiocytoma of pulmonary arteries presenting as pulmonary aneurysms
2013, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Such cases are mostly associated with pulmonary hypertension [1]. They may also accompany pulmonary valve leaflet absence, ventriculoarterial junction stenosis, infection, arteriosclerosis, degenerative changes of the elastic media, cystic medial necrosis, vasculitis, hypertension, trauma, and arteriovenous communication [1–3]. The pathogenesis of pulmonary artery primary sarcoma is also unclear, and it has been suggested that these tumors arise from the multipotential mesenchymal cells of the muscle anchorage in the bulbus cordis [5, 6].
