Abstract

In recent years, several computer programs for dental identification in mass disasters have been developed. Unfortunately, it may be difficult to get access to such programs. The Norwegian police presently utilizes a text retrieval program, NOVA^∗STATUS, for detection work. This program is based on the British STATUS ONE program, and it enables the user to find from a large pool of postmortem dental registration one or several sets containing specific information about one tooth or several teeth. The complete relevant set(s) can be displayed for visual examination and comparison. A coding system for dental information has been developed as well as a system for interrogating the computer. This system and its efficiency have been tested on a simulated small scale disaster where various well-known difficulties in dental identification were included.

Natural language processing for clinical notes in dentistry: A systematic review

To identify and synthesise research on applications of natural language processing (NLP) for information extraction and retrieval from clinical notes in dentistry.
A predefined search strategy was applied in EMBASE, CINAHL and Medline. Studies eligible for inclusion were those that that described, evaluated, or applied NLP to clinical notes containing either human or simulated patient information. Quality of the study design and reporting was independently assessed based on a set of questions derived from relevant tools including CHecklist for critical Appraisal and data extraction for systematic Reviews of prediction Modelling Studies (CHARMS). A narrative synthesis was conducted to present the results.
Of the 17 included studies, 10 developed and evaluated NLP methods and 7 described applications of NLP-based information retrieval methods in dental records. Studies were published between 2015 and 2021, most were missing key details needed for reproducibility, and there was no consistency in design or reporting. The 10 studies developing or evaluating NLP methods used document classification or entity extraction, and 4 compared NLP methods to non-NLP methods. The quality of reporting on NLP studies in dentistry has modestly improved over time.
Study design heterogeneity and incomplete reporting of studies currently limits our ability to synthesise NLP applications in dental records. Standardisation of reporting and improved connections between NLP methods and applied NLP in dentistry may improve how we can make use of clinical notes from dentistry in population health or decision support systems.

Possibilities for dental identification in the case of mass disaster in Slovenia

The quality of the keeping of dental records in 50 dental offices in Slovenia selected at random was established. Every third dentist (approx. 29%) completed an extensive dental survey. Twelve percent of people have orthopantomographic images of their jawbones in their documentation, which are very useful in the identification process. Within the process of the reprivatisation of dental activities, which was abolished in Slovenia in 1957 and reintroduced in 1992, insufficient completion of dental records is still detected. The cause of the present circumstances can also be ascribed to totally incompatible computer programs for the recording of dental treatments. The introduction of computers in dental practice has also led to the abandonment of the accurate filling out of dental records (Form 8.1).
Computer registration of missing persons. A case of Scandinavian cooperation in identification of an unknown male skeleton

A case is described where the identity of an unknown body was established several years after death and despite the fact that the body was found in a foreign country. This was made possible due to the established Interpol routines and the good cooperation between the authorities involved in the Scandinavian countries. A significant role was also played by a computerized register with antemortem dental findings of missing Swedish citizens.
A six-digit code for computer-aided dental identification

A six-digit code for dental description is presented. It is intended to simplify the establishment of ante- and postmortem data files in a computer and consists of two digits for designating the individual tooth, two digits for describing the surface or surface combination involved (if any), and two digits for describing treatment type and material. Depending upon the number of teeth present, the dental description of one person may thus comprise from 1 to 32 six-digit numbers, ante- or post-mortem. The comparison by the computer of one antemortem with one postmortem set of numbers is a simple procedure.
