Treating Congenital Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Contracture
2018, Hand ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Careful examination to evaluate for a palpable mass over the MCP joint reveals nodularity of the flexor tendons. The patient’s ability to actively extend the finger should be carefully evaluated, allowing the provider to distinguish between a contracture and possible absence of the extensor mechanism.10 Weakness of the extensor mechanism can be a contributing factor in a diagnosis of camptodactyly; therefore, carefully assessing finger extension (discussed later) is important for guiding both nonoperative and operative treatment.

2015, Journal of Hand SurgeryRestoration of the central slip in congenital form of boutonniere deformity: Case report
2014, Journal of Hand SurgeryCitation Excerpt :A chronic boutonniere deformity is characterized by flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint and hyperextension of the distal interphalangeal joint, which result from imbalance between the long extensor-intrinsic complex acting over the dorsal aspect of the proximal interphalangeal joint and the flexor tendon volarly, contributing to increased tension in the lateral bands as they slip volarward.5,7,8 Carneiro and Lauderdale3 reported 5 congenital boutonniere deformities caused by attenuation of the central slip. They speculated that the attenuation was caused by an accident rather than a formation disorder occurring during embryogenesis.
