Accordingly, studies utilizing multiple measures of arousal find that the subjective feeling of arousal and its associated autonomic responses are highly correlated with measures of electrocortical arousal (Lim et al., 1996; Waldstein et al., 2000; Nagai et al., 2004). The brain states corresponding to different arousal levels are set by the activity of cholinergic and monoaminergic neural populations (Lee and Dan, 2012).

Spontaneous phasic activity increases in states of anxiety; in the state of “worry” (typically in generalized anxiety or obsessive state) many spontaneous phasic responses are observed [14–16]. After treatment we observed a significant decrese in tonic and phasic SCL, demonstrating a lower level of arousal, and a reduction in anxiety and involuntary mental activity.
