Phenomenology, epidemiology, co-morbidity and treatment of a specific phobia of vomiting: A systematic review of an understudied disorder
2018, Clinical Psychology ReviewCitation Excerpt :Only two of the included treatment studies scored in the moderate range (Ahlen, Edberg, Di Schiena, & Bergström, 2015; Riddle-Walker et al., 2016) and the other two scored in the weak range (Klonoff, Knell, & Janata, 1984; Philips, 1985), demonstrating the lack of high quality research exploring effective interventions for SPOV. Two papers explored the validity of the SPOV diagnosis (Himle, McPhee, Cameron, & Curtis, 1989; Lelliott, McNamee, & Marks, 1991) (Table 2). These studies were conducted prior to the change in name to Specific Phobia.
Prevalence, correlates, and comorbidities of four DSM-IV specific phobia subtypes: Results from the Korean Epidemiological Catchment Area study
2013, Psychiatry ResearchCitation Excerpt :Animal phobias were the most common subtype in the present study, while natural environment phobias were most common in previous studies (Fredrikson et al., 1996; Curtis et al., 1998; Stinson et al., 2007; Depla et al., 2008). Consistent with previous clinical (Ost, 1987; Himle et al., 1989) and epidemiologic studies (Becker et al., 2007; Depla et al., 2008), age of onset was significantly later in situational phobias compared to other SP subtypes. However, the mean age of onset of SP in the present study was generally older than that observed in studies of youths, in which most SP occurred before 18 years of age (Beesdo et al., 2009).
Brave men and timid women? A review of the gender differences in fear and anxiety
2009, Clinical Psychology ReviewAn internet-based study on the relation between disgust sensitivity and emetophobia
2008, Journal of Anxiety DisordersCitation Excerpt :For example, 70% of people between 20 and 50 years use the internet, whereas this number decreases dramatically in older people (Hayslett & Wildemuth, 2004). Yet, using non-web-based studies, it was still reported that people with vomit phobias are young women (Himle, McPhee, Cameron, & Curtis, 1989; Veale & Lambrou, 2006). However, as the number of studies is scarce at present, future studies should determine whether the skewed age and gender distributions are consistently observed in emetophobia.
