Homotopic callosal inhibition

Abstract

Previous theories concerning the function of the corpus callosum have included a “topographic” column-to-column excitatory theory and a diffuse “regional” inhibitory theory. Here it is shown that a topographic inhibitory model, in conjunction with a postulate concerning surround inhibition among cortical columns, produces complementary patterns of cortical column firing which, although qualitatively different, do not imply quantitative metabolic asymmetries. The cognitive implications of such homotopic inhibition are discussed.

      However, callosotomy can prevent not only the propagation of seizures, but also their inhibition (Roberts, 1999). This provides support for the theory of homotopic inhibition, first outlined by Cook (1984), according to which the CC allows one hemisphere to inhibit the activity of the other through the activation of inhibitory interneurons (Kawaguchi, 1992; Toyama et al., 1969). This mechanism is also thought to underlie functional lateralization.

Badzakova-Trajkov and colleagues used fMRI in 155 participants (107 right handed) to determine lateralization of speech production, face processing and spatial processing in frontal, temporal and parietal lobes respectively.
