Age-related differences in problem-solving skills: Reduced benefit of sleep for memory trace consolidation
2022, Neurobiology of AgingCitation Excerpt :Importantly, functional neuroimaging studies in young adults have identified the neuroanatomical substrates that support the mental components of problem solving skills (for a review, see; Unterrainer and Owen, 2006). These studies show that the dorsolateral and medial prefrontal cortex, posterior hippocampus (Dagher et al., 2001), supplemental motor cortex, posterior parietal, cerebellum, and striatum; and in particular, the caudate nucleus (Baker et al., 1996; Dagher et al., 1999; Dagher et al., 2001; Goldfine et al., 2013; Owen et al., 1996; Rowe et al., 2001; Unterrainer and Owen, 2006; Vahdat et al., 2017) are recruited during the acquisition of a novel cognitive strategy. Our recent work has demonstrated that either a night of sleep, or a daytime nap enhances performance on problem solving skills compared to wake (van den Berg et al., 2021).
