This effect could only be demonstrated in the luteal phase but not during the follicular phase of the cycle (18, 19). Likewise, no effect on gonadotropin secretion by opioid antagonists was seen in postmenopausal women (20) and in early puberty (21), further underscoring the relationship between the opioid system and circulating sex steroids.
