Current Validated Medical Treatments: Pharmacologic Interventions
2020, Otolaryngologic Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :It is unclear if people with depression and/or anxiety are more prone to developing tinnitus; if tinnitus is a direct cause of depression and/or anxiety in some people; or if mood disorders simply exacerbate tinnitus severity independently from the pathologic mechanism or mechanisms responsible for tinnitus.19,28 Several studies have demonstrated a higher prevalence of depression and anxiety in patients with bothersome tinnitus than in control sample populations.29–31 It has been suggested that conclusions from small, potentially biased samples may not reflect the true prevalence of psychological disorders in people with tinnitus, and the reported prevalence may be subject to bias when data are drawn from population samples derived from psychiatry or mental-health clinics.32
