Abstract
Gender and burnout among Dutch General Practitioners
The prevalence of burnout and the number of female general practitioners (GPs) have increased. Sex and gender might be related with (the development of) burnout. Gender refers to masculinity and femininity as aspects of selfimage and social construction. The aim of this study is to examine whether there are sex and gender differences in the development of burnout among GPs. The main research question is ’What is the relationship between gender and burnout among GPs, after controlling for sex and other burnout determinants (i.e., coping, work-home interference, social support and work characteristics)?’. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 349 Dutch GPs. 261 subjects filled out a questionnaire about work characteristics, work-home interference, coping, social support, and burnout. Data were analyzed by means of t-tests and multivariate regression analyses. The results showed that male GPs are more masculine than female GPs, but equally feminine. Masculine GPs are less burned out than feminine GPs. Gender is related to work characteristics, coping, lack of social support from partner, and work-home interference. Some of these variables are in turn related to burnout.
We can conclude that there is a relation between gender and burnout, but that this relationship is mediated by mental load, social support from partner and depressive coping.
