Therapeutische relatie en empathie in cognitieve gedragstherapie

Pleidooi voor meer aandacht

Samenvatting

Bij inzichtgevende psychotherapieën speelt de therapeutische relatie een belangrijke rol. Een van de middelen om deze tot stand te brengen is empathie. In de cognitieve gedragstherapie ligt het primaat voor veranderingen op de juiste toepassing van wetenschappelijk onderbouwde technieken. De therapeutische relatie speelt een veel minder prominente rol en er wordt weinig specifieke aandacht besteedt aan het gebruik van empathie. In dit artikel wordt bepleit om in de cognitieve gedragstherapie meer oog te hebben voor de totstandkoming van een goede therapeutische relatie en het expliciete gebruik van empathie. Voor cognitieve gedragstherapeuten zijn vooral cognitieve (filosofische) empathie en emotionele steun van belang. Affectieve empathie, die vooral bij inzichtgevende psychotherapieën wordt ingezet, is ondergeschikt. Bij de reparatie van therapeutische breuken, de behandeling van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en in de derde golf van de cognitieve gedragstherapie is het gebruik van affectieve empathie juist weer relevant.
