Grijzestofpathologie bij multiple sclerose: histopathologische, moleculair biologische en MRI-studies

Samenvatting

Multiple sclerose (MS) is een ziekte van het centrale zenuwstelsel (CZS), de hersenen en het ruggenmerg. MS doet doorgaans zijn intrede tussen het 20ste en 30ste levensjaar en heeft dan ook een enorme impact op het dagelijks leven van de patiënten. In het merendeel van de patiënten (~80%) begint de ziekte met een relapsing- remitting(RRMS)-beloop (Compston & Coles, 2008). Deze patiënten krijgen te maken met ‘schubs’ waarbij ontstekingsreacties in het CZS aanwezig zijn. Deze schubs, die kunnen leiden tot een veelvoud aan neurologische symptomen (bijv. eenzijdig gezichtsvelduitval, gevoelsstoornissen, verzwakte ledematen), verdwijnen ‘spontaan’ na verloop van tijd, geheel of gedeeltelijk.
