Gedragsproblemen en sterktes bij kinderen met Downsyndroom

Samenvatting

Kinderen met een mentale beperking hebben een verhoogd risico op gedragsproblemen. Het is echter onduidelijk wat de precieze aard en mate is van problemen bij kinderen met specifieke syndromen, zoals kinderen met Downsyndroom. Er is bovendien ook onvoldoende kennis over de sterktes van deze kinderen. Deze vragenlijststudie beschrijft zowel de gedragsmatige moeilijkheden als sterktes van Vlaamse en Nederlandse kinderen met Downsyndroom (37 jongens en 30 meisjes, gemiddelde leeftijd 9,5). Van deze kinderen vertoonde 34 % klinische gedragsproblemen (gemeten met de Child Behavior Checklist), voornamelijk sociale problemen, aandachtsproblemen en denkproblemen. Deze kinderen bleken ook verschillende sterktes te bezitten (gemeten met de Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale), vooral voor het uitbouwen van goede relaties met hun familie en het uiten en ontvangen van affectie. Deze studie toont ook aan dat kinderen met Down én een comorbide autismespectrumstoornis een meer maladaptief profiel met meer problemen en minder sterktes hebben.
