De invloed van de voedingspraktijken van ouders op de BMI van het kind: resultaten van een multicultureel cohort

Samenvatting

De voedingspraktijken van ouders beïnvloeden de ontwikkeling van overgewicht van kinderen. In dit onderzoek is nagegaan in hoeverre de voedingspraktijken van moeders geassocieerd zijn met de Body Mass Index (BMI) van het kind op 11- tot 12-jarige leeftijd en welke rol de etniciteit hierbij speelt. Daarnaast is nagegaan in welke mate etnische verschillen in voedingspraktijken de etnische verschillen in BMI konden verklaren.

De vragenlijstgegevens zijn afkomstig van de ABCD-studie. De voedingspraktijken ‘restrictie’, ‘druk om te eten’ en ‘monitoring’ werden bepaald met de Child Feeding Questionnaire. De studiepopulatie bestond uit 590 11- tot 12-jarige kinderen, onderverdeeld in Nederlandse (n = 446) en niet-Nederlandse (n = 144) kinderen. Meer ‘restrictie’ was geassocieerd met een hogere BMI en meer ‘druk om te eten’ met een lagere BMI. Deze associaties werden beïnvloed door de perceptie van de moeder over het gewicht van haar kind. De gemiddelde BMI van niet-Nederlandse kinderen was ongeveer 1,40 kg/m² hoger dan die van Nederlandse kinderen (p < 0,001). Niet-Nederlandse moeders voerden significant meer ‘restrictie’ (gemiddeld: 12,4 [SD: 4,2]) en ‘druk om te eten’ (10,9 [3,8]) uit vergeleken met Nederlandse moeders (11,2 [4,3] en 9,9 [3,7], resp.). ‘Restrictie’ verklaarde de etnische verschillen in de BMI voor 11,6 %. ‘Monitoring’ was niet geassocieerd met de BMI.

De voedingspraktijken van moeders en hun perceptie over het gewicht van hun kind zijn mogelijke aangrijpingspunten voor preventie van overgewicht, met name onder kinderen van niet-Nederlandse afkomst.
