Als iemand de huisartsenpost belt met de klacht ‘pijn op de borst’ zet de triagist vaak een spoedambulance in. Achteraf blijkt dat vaak onnodig, want in de eerste lijn is de kans op cardiale aandoeningen klein. Om de ambulancediensten te ontzien zou men de triage anders moeten inrichten, een bruikbaar beslismodel voor pijn op de borst invoeren en snelle consultatie van een regiearts mogelijk maken. Meer samenwerking in de spoedzorgketen, bijvoorbeeld door een regionaal budget, kan de druk op de ambulancediensten verlichten, de patiëntenzorg verbeteren en de kosten van spoedeisende hulp reduceren.
