Psychische klachten komen veel voor. Veel patiënten geven de voorkeur aan psychologische begeleiding in de eigen huisartsenpraktijk en krijgen liever geen medicatie. Tegelijk hebben artsen in opleiding tot huisarts (aios) behoefte om meer psychologische gespreksvaardigheden te leren. Problem-solving treatment (PST) zou hiervoor een goede optie kunnen zijn. PST is een korte, psychologische behandeling (maximaal zes sessies van elk hoogstens 30 minuten) die patiënten leert hoe ze zelf stapsgewijs hun problemen in het dagelijks leven kunnen aanpakken. Ons onderzoek wees uit dat aios deze behandeling goed kunnen leren en deze ook zinvol vinden voor hun consultvoering. PST biedt een praktisch handvat bij de behandeling van patiënten met psychische klachten en bevat generieke vaardigheden, zoals het concretiseren van problemen en activeren van patiënten, die ook toepasbaar zijn bij andere consulten. Bovendien verbeterden de patiënten met psychische klachten die PST kregen meer dan de patiënten die gebruikelijke zorg ontvingen. Wij adviseren huisartsenopleidingen om aios problem-solving-vaardigheden te leren, zodat zij een praktisch instrument in handen krijgen voor de behandeling van patiënten met psychische klachten.
