Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between communication, expressive and receptive, and challenging behaviors among 168 toddlers with autism spectrum disorder. Communication level was evaluated using the Battelle Developmental Inventory, 2nd Edition and challenging behaviors were assessed using Baby and Infant Screen for Children with aUtIsm Traits, Part 3. Results indicate that lower levels of expressive and receptive communication are significantly correlated with lower levels of aggressive/disruptive behavior and self injurious behavior. However, lower receptive communication alone significantly correlates with higher levels of stereotypies, self-injurious behavior, and to a lesser extent aggressive/disruptive behavior. Implications of the results and how they integrate into the current knowledge base are discussed.
