Executive functions (EFs) refer to a set of diverse, higher-order cognitive skills that includes inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, updating information in working memory, error monitoring, sustaining attention, and planning. EFs support goal-directed behavior and are believed to play a crucial role in self-regulation of behavior and emotions.
