Abstract
We tested a model of socialization to work in the family context and its implications as a lever for school engagement using a sample of 154 parent–youth dyads living in the United States. A path model was fitted to data. Findings revealed that parents’ reported work experiences was aligned to youths’ perception of their parents’ success in the work domain. Also, a significant association was found between youth’s perception of their parents’ family success and youth’s emotional and experiential conceptualizations of work. Furthermore, youth who viewed work as a positive experience were more likely to be engaged in schoolwork, both emotionally and cognitively. Implications for vocational guidance are discussed.
Résumé
Socialisation des jeunes au travail et à l’école au sein de la famille. Nous avons testé un modèle de la socialisation au travail dans le contexte familial et ses implications en tant que levier pour l’engagement scolaire à l’aide d’un échantillon de 154 dyades parent-jeune vivant aux États-Unis. Un modèle de pistes causales a été ajusté aux données. Les résultats révèlent que les expériences professionnelles reportées par les parents étaient alignées à la perception que les jeunes avaient du succès de leurs parents dans le domaine professionnel. Par ailleurs, une association significative a été trouvée entre la perception des jeunes quant à l’équilibre de leurs rôles de parents et de travailleurs et leur conceptions émotionnelle et expérientielle du travail. De plus, les jeunes qui percevaient le travail comme une expérience positive étaient plus susceptibles d’être engagés dans le travail scolaire, tant émotionnellement que cognitivement. Les implications pour le conseil en orientation sont discutées.
Zusammenfassung
Die Sozialisation von Jugendlichen zu Arbeit und Unterricht innerhalb der Familie. Anhand einer Stichprobe von 154 Eltern-Jugendlichen-Dyadegruppen aus den USA haben wir ein Modell zur Sozialisation zur Arbeit im familiären Kontext getestet und Implikationen für das Schulengagement abgeleitet. Ein Pfadmodell wurde an die Daten angepasst. Die Befunde zeigten, dass die berichteten Arbeitserfahrungen der Eltern mit der Wahrnehmung der Jugendlichen bzgl. des Erfolgs der Eltern im Arbeitsbereich übereinstimmen. Es wurden ebenfalls signifikante Assoziationen zwischen der Wahrnehmung der Jugendlichen bezüglich des familiären Erfolgs ihrer Eltern und der emotionalen und erfahrungsbezogenen Arbeitskonzeptualisierung der Jugendlichen gefunden. Des Weiteren waren Jugendliche, welche die Arbeit als eine positive Erfahrung wahrgenommen haben, engagierter in der Schularbeit, sowohl emotional als auch kognitiv. Implikationen für die berufliche Beratung werden diskutiert.
Resumen
Socialización laboral de jóvenes en el contexto familiar. Hemos ensayado un modelo de socialización para el trabajo en el contexto familiar y sus implicaciones como palanca para la involucración en la escuela utilizando una muestra de 154 parejas que viven en los Estados Unidos. Un modelo de trayectorias se ajusto a los datos. Los resultados revelaron que las experiencias explicadas por los familiares estaban alineadas con las percepciones que los jóvenes a tenían del éxito de sus familiares en el contexto laboral. También se identifico una asociación significativa entre la percepción por parte de los jóvenes a del éxito de los familiares y las conceptualizaciones experienciales y emocionales del trabajo. Además, los jóvenes que veían el trabajo como una experiencia positiva eran más proclives a involucrarse en la tarea escolar, tanto emocional como cognitivamente. Se discuten también las implicaciones para la orientación vocacional.
