Samenvatting

Meralgia paraesthetica (MP) is een syndroom met verschijnselen van pijn met een prikkelend, brandend karakter en soms met gevoelloosheid in een nauwkeurig aangegeven gebied aan de voor- en zijkant van het bovenbeen.1 MP is een vrij zeldzame aandoening, het incidentiecijfer is 4,3 per 10.000 personen per jaar.2 Nederlandse morbiditeitsregistraties vermelden het syndroom niet als zodanig. Omdat de kwaal doorgaans vanzelf overgaat, ziet de huisarts waarschijnlijk slechts een deel van alle gevallen. Overigens is MP de meest voorkomende compressiemononeuropathie. Mannen hebben het driemaal zo vaak als vrouwen. De aandoening is meestal unilateraal.
