Erysipelas is acute, scherp omgrensde ontsteking van de huid die zich onderhuids kan uitbreiden, waarbij ook de lymfevaten aangedaan kunnen zijn. De patiënt heeft symptomen als plotseling optredende hoge koorts (soms met koude rillingen), hoofdpijn, misselijkheid en braken. Algemene verschijnselen als algehele malaise, moeheid en een lusteloos gevoel gaan nogal eens aan de ziekte vooraf.
