Health problems have been shown to occur more frequently among people with a low socioeconomic (SE) position. Policies to improve the health status of people with low SE position often focus on deprived urban areas. However, similar SE health difference occur in more rural parts of the Netherlands. The public health situation in the north of the Netherlands exemplifies this situation. Overall, and in particular in its rural parts an adverse SE position is highly prevalent. Policies to decrease this clustering of adversity in deprived more rural areas are thus highly needed.
