Verslaving, een chronisch recidiverende hersenziekte

Samenvatting

De visies op verslaving en verslaafden zijn in de loop der tijden nogal eens veranderd. In de achter ons liggende twee eeuwen werden de oorzaken gezocht in het individu, in de verslavende stof of in de sociale omstandigheden. De laatste decennia gaat de belangstelling van onderzoekers vooral uit naar verslaving als een hersenziekte, en de verslaafde als een patiënt met een chronische aandoening. Dierexperimenteel onderzoek en nieuwe beeldvormende technieken stellen ons steeds beter in staat te bepalen welke hersenstructuren en welke neurotransmitters er bij het ontstaan van een verslaving zijn betrokken. Met deze technieken kan ook de werking van interventies zichtbaar gemaakt en verbeterd worden.
