Summary
The effectiveness of psychotherapy is a pressing issue that remains to be resolved. Psychotherapists tend to focus more upon the initial and less upon the final stages of psychotherapies.
An adequate assessment of the effectiveness of psychotherapy requires a distinction between a social, a personal and an intrapsychic level of effect (cost–effectiveness, symptom relief and ego–strength, respectively). In addition, one should distinguish the effect from the process of psychotherapy.
Arguments are provided in favour of a differential research policy, marked by a broad effort in investigating the effect of psychotherapy on the social and the personal level, and an in–depthinvestment into investigations of the intrapsychic effect as well as into the process of psychotherapy.
