Summary
Empirical research does not always confirm the assumption that disruptive children have a negative sense of self. This can be explained by the fact (a) that these children tend to hide their negative self–feelings, and (b) that self–report measures do not succeed in capturing the underlying sense of self. This explanation was tested in a study with 95 kindergartners. Harter's direct self–report measure, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance, and Cassidy's indirect interview assessment, the Puppet Interview, were used to measure the self. The results show that kindergartners with disruptive behavior, when compared to a control–group, evidence a more negative self–evaluation in the Puppet Interview, but not in Harter's self–report scale. This adds to the plausibility of the interpretation mentioned above. Unlike direct self–report measures, indirect interview assessments like the Puppet Interview, seem to succeed in capturing the real, underlying self–feelings.
