Intergenerationele overdracht van gehechtheid

De stand van zaken in het psychometrisch, klinisch en pedagogisch onderzoek

Samenvatting

Dit artikel beoogt een beeld te geven van het onderzoek naar de intergenerationele overdracht van gehechtheid. De vraag is hoe ervaringen van ouders met gehechtheidsrelaties in hun kinderjaren van invloed zijn op de gehechtheidsrelaties die zij op hun beurt met hun eigen kinderen opbouwen. Om de kwaliteit van gehechtheid bij kinderen te bepalen staat het onderzoeksveld de observatieprocedure van de Vreemde Situatie ter beschikking; voor volwassenen werd het Gehechtheidsbiografisch Interview (GBI) ontwikkeld. De ontwikkeling van dit interview heeft het onderzoek naar intergenerationele overdracht in een stroomversnelling gebracht. Dat maakt het mogelijk om op verschillende studies terug te vallen bij een evaluatie van de merites van het instrument en ook op grond van meta-analyses gevolgtrekkingen te doen. Na deze psychometrische verantwoording, die ook inhoudelijk interessante gegevens laat zien, volgt een verkenning van de reikwijdte van de hypothese en het mechanisme van intergenerationele overdracht van gehechtheid.

Summary

Influence of parents’ internal working model or state of mind with respect to attachment on the attachment relationship with their own child. To measure parents’ mental representation of childhood attachment experiences, the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) was developed. We briefly present studies that examined the AAI's reliability and discriminant validity. In addition, the distribution of AAI classifications in clinical and nonclinical samples is described and visualized. As the AAI has been used in a number of studies that focused on the relationship between parents’ state of mind and the quality of the infant-parent relationship, a meta-analysis of these studies enables us to assess the tenability of the idea of intergenerational transmission of attachment.
