Abstract
Children with autistic-spectrum disorders experience problems in social situations. A social skills group treatment is an important intervention for this target group. It may help them to gain a better understanding of social situations, and to enlarge their skills in such situations. In this article we describe how an existing training program for socially anxious children was adapted for use with children presenting with autistic-spectrum disorders. The nature and severity of their problems make such adaptations necessary. After first discussing how therapists can determine whether or not it is appropriate for a particular child to participate in the training program, we then describe how the group is composed, and finally what changes were made to the content of the original training sessions. The manner in which parents and teachers are involved in the training program is also addressed. Furthermore, we present the provisional results of this method of training. In our discussion section we give some suggestions for further research. We also briefly go into adaptations that need to be made for children who, in addition to an autistic-spectrum disorder, also have a mild intellectual disability.
