Abstract

While imaginal exposure is considered an effective intervention in the treatment of traumarelated problems, there still is no definitive cure for these disorders. It is concluded that habituation, the mechanism that according to Foa and Kozak is responsible for the efficacy of prolongued imaginal exposure, is not the only mechanism that can be derived from modern psychological theories of emotion. Because such theories seem to be worthwhile in the conception of new effective psychological interventions for psychotrauma, the theorie of Lang is amplified. Two examples of an intervention called ‘counterconditioning of the UCS-representation’ are explained. This intervention is inspired by Langs theory. The discussion elaborates on the clinical status of the intervention.
