Abstract
Cognitive behavioural therapy applies the use of behavioural experiments. These behavioural experiments are testing the patient's cognitions in order to help the patient to acquire less frightening cognitions. Setting up a behavioural experiment requires several steps: determination of the frightening cognition, formulation of an alternative cognition, determination of behaviour that does not accord to the cognition, making a prediction and setting up an information gathering exercise. The behavioural experiment are illustrated by case–histories of hypochondrial patients. Some clues in designing an experiment are mentioned: focusing on internal stimuli, the cognitive demonstration and collecting missing information. The article concludes with discussing some problems in the set up of experiments.
