Abstract
Dysphagia is a widespread problem among patients in both acute and chronic care facilities. Once the etiology of the dysphagia is diagnosed, the patient frequently must cope with chronic, functional swallowing problems. This article describes teams developed in acute care settings that are composed of members of disciplines directly involved with these functional problems. Members of one team had no specific expertise in dysphagia prior to joining the team. The teams received clinical and administrative support at two facilities. The authors believe this approach to care can be utilized by others in a cost-effective manner to alleviate malnutrition and aspiration, as well as to support staff members and patients as they cope with often chronic functional disabilities. Descriptions of team patients are provided, based on retrospective reviews of team consultations and clinical records.
