Abstract
This paper offers a theoretical model for how new sensorimotor skills may develop in a social context, and how social communication may be altered by specific combinations of sensorimotor skills. Longitudinal data is presented showing how dyadic communicative systems make developmental transitions in relation to developmental changes in an infant’s skills at object manipulation.
