Known-groups validity is demonstrated when a test or questionnaire can discriminate between two groups known to differ on the variable of interest.
Description
Pain, mood, attitudes, disability, and quality of life are examples of health constructs that are not directly observable and have no “gold standard” method of measurement. One way to test the construct validity of a test or questionnaire when there is no gold standard is to examine known-groups validity (or extreme-groups validity). In this approach the test or questionnaire is administered to two groups that are known to have or that logically should have different levels of the construct to confirm whether the hypothesized difference is reflected in the scores of the two groups.
