Inleiding

De ademhaling is een vitale functie die wordt aangestuurd vanuit het centrale zenuwstelsel en uitgevoerd door het thoraco-abdominale spierapparaat. Door spiercontractie wordt het volume van de thorax vergroot en wordt lucht in de longen aangezogen. Uitademing is een passief fenomeen, gebaseerd op spierrelaxatie en elastische inkrimping van de longen. Door periodieke activatie en relaxatie van het thoraco-abdominale spierapparaat ontstaat de ademhalingscyclus. Ter hoogte van de hersenstam bevindt zich een complex van kernen met zenuwcellen die cruciaal zijn voor de voortgang van de ademhaling. Medullaire en pontiene ademhalingscentra ontvangen en integreren prikkels uit perifere receptoren en uit diverse hersengebieden. Via efferente zenuwbanen wordt het thoraco-abdominale spierapparaat vanuit deze kernen aangestuurd.
