Inleiding

De vraag naar gezondheidszorg is sterk toegenomen. Gezondheid is voor velen de belangrijkste waarde in het leven. Van de medicus wordt een oplossing verwacht voor velerlei aandoeningen, gebreken en tegenslagen die het menselijk bestaan treffen. Tegelijkertijd is door wetenschappelijke en technologische ontwikkelingen het aanbod van voorzieningen gegroeid. De wisselwerking tussen verwachtingen en mogelijkheden vergroot voortdurend het terrein van de zorg. Daarmee treedt een enorme kostengroei op, die problemen geeft. Worden mensen op deze manier niet te zeer afhankelijk van gezondheidszorg? Krijgt de arts bovendien niet allerlei problemen voorgelegd waarvoor hij niet deskundig is? Deze vragen geven aanleiding tot een ethische discussie over de doelen van gezondheidszorg.
