Mental Health of Refugee and Conflict-Affected Populations

Abstract

It has been well-established that refugees evidence increased rates of psychological disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. While the contribution of pre- and post-migration experiences to refugee mental health has been extensively examined, relatively less research has focused on the mechanisms that may contribute to the development and maintenance of psychological disorders in refugees. This chapter discusses three potential mechanisms that may impact on refugee mental health, namely emotion regulation, cognitive appraisals and memory processes. Examples of research to date with refugee populations on each of these mechanisms are presented, and potential future research directions are outlined. Implications for the development of psychological interventions tailored to the refugee context are discussed.
