Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to discuss the problems I have encountered as a high-functioning adult with autism trying to make her way into the world of work, dating, marriage and family, and participation in society as a whole. Because of the many difficulties associated with autism, this has been twice as hard to accomplish, and I am still trying to break through the barriers that have been set before me. I have omitted the term high-functioning from the title because once a person is diagnosed as autistic, he or she remains autistic for an indefinite period of time. Despite a higher level of functioning, a person like me still has difficulty being a fully participating member of society. Before one can explore the present, it is necessary to go back to where everything originates: childhood and adolescence.
