Abstract
Substance abuse, as the title of this volume indicates, has multiple causes, including biological, psychological, and environmental variables that interact with one another to determine whether a given individual will actually come to abuse an addictive substance. However, as the title of this chapter suggests, the personality characteristics that covary with substance abuse may or may not act as causative factors. Furthermore, personality characteristics may be antecedents, concomitants, or consequences of substance abuse.
