Abstract
It is comforting when two researchers who make widely differing assumptions regarding language and communication develop converging perspectives. Such convergence is enough to make one believe that there is an underlying order in nature. Dr. Helen Tager-Flusberg (Chapter 4) and I (Chapter 3) focus on a number of problems that each of us agrees are well worth addressing, regardless of theoretical orientation. That is not to say that we agree on everything. For instance, I suspect that she would attach much less importance to factors such as operant conditioning and modeling than would I. Nonetheless, there are several noteworthy commonalities that emerged from our respective chapters and it is on these commonalities that I would like to focus.
