Abstract
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) is the current diagnostic label for children presenting with serious and pervasive problems of attention, impulsivity, and excessive gross motor activity Previous labels and their approximate dates of use in chronological order include: minimal brain damage (1947 to early 1950s), minimal brain dysfunction (1950s to early 1960s), hyperkinetic reaction of childhood (1968–1979), and attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (1980–1986). Formal diagnostic labels aside, lay persons have nearly always referred to these individuals as simply “hyperactive.”
