Abstract
The history of the study of infantile autism is almost exactly contemporaneous with the development of clinical psychology as an applied science. Clinical psychology has been formally taught at degree level in Britain since 1947, and in these past 30 years there has been a very fruitful interaction between pure and applied research. In particular, the past three decades have witnessed the development of quite sophisticated and varied experimental methodologies for investigating an ever-increasing variety of clinical problems and phenomena.
