Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders

  • Chapter
Book cover Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology

Abstract

It is fitting to include both the borderline and narcissistic personality disorders (BPD and NPD, respectively) in one chapter. They are in some respects close brethren, yet in other respects distant relatives. Both diagnoses were new additions to the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III; APA, 1980). Both represent current psychoanalytic interest in severe personality disorders (Frances, 1980; Gunderson, 1983). In fact, from a psychodynamic perspective, all of the “various personality disorders represent examples of two basic varieties of pathology of self-esteem, namely, those diagnosable as borderline and those diagnosable as narcissistic” (Rinsley, 1984, p. 2). It is with respect to their impact that they diverge. To use a popular phraseology of dissertations, there is a plethora of research on BPD and a dearth on NPD.
