Historical Background

Autism is a new diagnostic concept for Kazakhstan. There is no accurate data on the number of autistic children in Kazakhstan. In accordance with data of the State Republican Psychological-Medical-Pedagogical Committee as of 2017, the approximate number of autistic children in Kazakhstan is around 3000. In 2003 the number of identified autistic children was 77.

Kazakhstan accepted International Classification of Disease (ICD) in January 2010, so medical services for autistic children in Kazakhstan are based on ICD classification. The main principles of medical services in Kazakhstan are stated in the Code “Health and the health system” of the Republic of Kazakhstan. By the Code, autism is under category of psychiatric disorder, so child psychiatrists are the only diagnosticians.
