Historical Background

In Turkey, the earlier work with autism has been limited to academic centers in three major cities of Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, where the major medical schools were. The first medical center dedicated to autism was established in 1989 at the Ankara University also where the first department of child psychiatry had been founded by Dr Mualla Ozturk in 1973. Drs Atalay Yörükoğlu in Ankara and Rıdvan Cebiroğlu in Istanbul were also among the academic leaders who clinically utilized the concept of autism as described by Leo Kanner. The DSM criteria after the publication of the DSM III in 1980 were quickly accepted in Turkey and became part of the standard evaluations.

Turkey currently hosts more than 30 university departments of child psychiatry and two state training hospitals with Child Psychiatry Departments that provide diagnosis and some of the treatment services for autism.
