Abstract

Recent research shows that anxiety disorders are prevalent in both children and adults (e.g., Anderson, Williams, McGee, & Silva, 1987; Myers et al., 1984; Regier et al., 1984). Based on data from the Epidemiological Catchment Area Program (e.g., Regier et al., 1984), 6-month prevalence rates for adult anxiety disorders were found to range from 5.4% to 13.4%. Anderson et al. (1987) examined the prevalence of DSM-III disorders in 792 11-year-old children from the general population in New Zealand. Separation anxiety disorder was found to have one of the highest prevalences, with overanxious disorder and simple phobia having intermediate prevalences.
