Abstract

Self-injury is a topic currently receiving a great deal of attention from psychologists, educators, and others who work with developmentally disabled persons. Through all of this activity, some tentative conclusions have emerged. For example, self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a modifiable condition, and epidemiological data are available concerning the incidence and characteristics of those who self-injure (see Gorman-Smith & Matson, 1985; Schroeder, Schroeder, Rojahn, & Mulick, 1981). Although results have been encouraging, an evaluation of the literature suggests a multitude of avenues for investigators to follow. One such avenue, the definition and classification of SIB, is the focus of this chapter.
