Abstract
Autism is a complex disorder that disrupts normal functioning in the brain and causes multiple behavioral problems. Autism is one of many diagnoses under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), a term which refers not to one specific problem, but rather to a variety of conditions that can affect communication, speech, social skills, emotional connection, and mental abilities. The core feature of autism is impairment in social interaction. However, this feature is also seen in other diagnoses, particularly those along the ASD spectrum. Other disorders that are considered to be on the autism spectrum are Asperger’s disorder, Rett’s disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS).
