Citizenship Pedagogies in Asia and the Pacific

Part of the book series: CERC Studies in Comparative Education ((CERC,volume 28))

Abstract

In the United States, there is a long tradition of emphasizing the importance of education for citizenship in a democracy. Within this broad commitment to democratic citizenship education, there are, however, advocates for differing approaches to civic education. In this chapter, I focus on one pedagogical approach by discussing the work of scholars who recommend an issues-centred pedagogy supported by a classroom climate or atmosphere that encourages student discussion.
