Over the last decades, a substantial body of evidence shed light on the long-term effects of ECE on life outcomes (Barnett, 1995, 1998; Campbell, Ramey, Pungello, Sparling, & Miller-Johnson, 2002; Belsky et al., 2007; Hurry & Sylva, 2007; Cascio, 2009; Ruhm & Waldfogel, 2012; Cortázar, 2015; Lehrl, Kluczniok, & Rossbach, 2016; Bakken, Brown, & Downing, 2017). This literature emphasizes the importance of ECE in several domains of development including educational achievement (Reynolds, Ou, & Topitzes, 2004; Pence et al., 2004; Freitas, Shelton, & Tudge, 2008; Cortázar, 2015), learning skills (Hyde and Kabiru, 2006; Conger, Gibbs, Uchikoshi, & Winsler, 2019), employment performance (Myers, 1992; Schweinhart, 1993; Wilson, 1995), physical and mental health outcomes (Fergusson & Horwood, 1998; Waldfogel, 2006; Gibb, Fergusson, & Horwood, 2012; Duncan et al., 2013) and drug abuse (Campbell et al., 2002).
