2018, Addictive BehaviorsCitation Excerpt :Smokers with the lowest educational attainment placed greater importance on the feeling that smoking was controlling their lives than better-educated peers. In a study of Danish adults, education was inversely related to external locus of control and participants with moderate to high external locus of control were two to four times as likely to be current than former smokers (Stronks, van der Mheen, Looman, & Mackenbach, 1997). In the current study, nondaily smokers were more likely to rate getting into trouble for smoking as an important reason to quit.
